I noticed that being punctual seemed to be more important to them than it is for us over here. There’s definitely situations here where it’s best to be punctual but I think in general it’s less important. I understand how a lot of them feel about waiting for others to show up when they’re late though. I used to be very punctual and stressed about being late often until I learned that I could be on time and not be stressed out about it. I thought the story of the person waiting 6 hours for their friend was interesting. We don’t rely on trains so much as they do and so they were in an interesting position due to their travel limitations. I think it’s nice that they have community hubs like the train stations though. That persons plan to get there early and then walk to somewhere before they meet their friend later at the station was nice. I wish we had hubs like that where we could take public transportation to and have a nice day in the area. I dislike living in such a car dominated society. Although I understand there are complications with being reliant on public transportation, I appreciate the better impact on the environment and efficiency.

  The book was about a man named Jon meeting a girl named Yuki on their flight to Tokyo because they were both reading manga. Yuki let Jon sit by the window so he could see Mount Fuji. They got off the plan and said goodbye but then Yuki had a letter that Jon had in his manga. I think that yuki called Jon and then they went to go see kabuki theater. But while looking for their seats they realized that an elderly couple were in their seats. They went to a kabuki worker and found out that yuki and Jon were there at the wrong day for the theater so they left. I think the story would be told similarly here, though I was confused at some sections about the letter and why they went to kabuki. Here, the book wouldn’t include manga or kabuki but I think it could be pretty similar if it was written as if it was in America.

KCAI Language Community

  I think that it is very valuable to have a community while learning a language. I have been attempting to learn Japanese since highschool but I haven’t gotten far any time that I have attempted. I never felt that I was learning in an effective way on my own so I tried a lot of different methods that I never liked because I felt that I wasn’t internalizing anything. But, now that I have others to speak it with at my same level, learning along with me, I feel much more confident that I am taking in the information. I even did the same course that we’re doing now over the summer shortly but I didn’t enjoy it because I felt that I wasn’t recalling the information and taking it in. I felt that after every lesson I would forget what I’d learned in the previous one. But, this time I feel like I’m taking in the information because I am using it with others.   It was interesting reading about how Japanese people live during the summer. I know that a lot of traditional Japanese homes are built very differently to ours and are insulated differently. I know that it gets very hot there during the summer and to hear that it’s getting even hotter is a little worrying. I like reading about taking care of the futons during different seasons. I bet sleeping on one that’s been fluffed up outside all day is really comfortable and it’s interesting how there’s an exact time to bring it in so it’s not too hot for bed time. I thought that keeping plants near windows and watering them to regulate temperature was really smart, and I bet it makes the air quality really nice throughout the house. When reading some of the blog posts back in Japanese I noticed that my stamina for reading is getting better as I keep challenging myself to keep going past when I’d want to stop.
