Food

After watching the video about spreading culture through food I am thinking about all the food from other cultures that I get excited about as well as food from my culture. I know that Japanese food in particular is very exciting for a lot of people here, including me. Unfortunately, I have tried sushi and do not like it but I have been able to try some other foods common in Japanese culture that I have enjoyed. I particularly love gyoza and takoyaki and I also go to the Asian market to try new things every now and then. I habitually purchase ramune and some candies, my favorite flavor is lychee even though I wasn’t super into the lychee jelly that I tried. I am so excited to one day visit Japan and try even more foods like authentic ramen and street foods! I also thought about some of the foods from my culture after the video. My grandmother used to cook us some Spanish foods for Christmas, but her ability to do that every year for us dwindled fast when I was younger so I do not have very clear memories of that which makes me sad. I also know of Native American foods because I have seen them online, but again my family doesn’t really eat them anymore. It also reminds me of some of the American Hamburgers that I’ve seen in japan and sometimes they make me laugh because they are so different from the ones here, like I think I’ve seen that some of them are really small and without buns. But sharing food is fun and it makes learning about and experiencing other cultures really fun. I think food culture gives us a really meaningful opportunity for cross cultural connections even with language and customs barriers.

  1. excellent observations and cultural comparisons! My favorite Japanese food is not sushi, and is not readily available in a restaurant. That's ok! I hope you can explore homestyle Japanese cooking. I think you'll like it!
